Tips for choosing air purifiers

How to choose air purifiers?

There is a wide variety of air purifiers in the market with different claims of features but how should we choose the right product for our family?

Why do you need an air purifier?

Indoor air is up to 100 times more polluted than outside air! Emissions from traffic and industrial plants, particles from cleaning fluids, beauty products, building materials, carpets, candles, cooking and smoking cause lung damage. In fact, indoor air may contain over 900 chemicals including pollen, molds, pet dander, and viruses. Since we spend 90% of our time indoors, consistently breathing clean air can have a significant impact on our health.

Tips for Choosing Air Purifier

1. Look for “CADR”

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is an established standard rating by the independent Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). It measures the efficiency of an air purifier, by calculating the volume of clean air produced per minute. CADR can be divided into 3 parts: the removal of dust, pollen and smoke, which are the most common indoor air pollutants. The higher the CADR, the better the air purifier is. Select an air purifier according to you needs, for example, the value for the pollutant that affects you the most.

2. Look for “Coverage Area”

Air purifiers are always designed for specific room sizes. Choose one which recommended coverage area is at least the same or larger than your room. When comparing different types of air purifier, be aware of the unit used for measuring the coverage area as it may vary from manufacturers.

3. Look for “HEPA”

High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) is a type of air filter. To qualify as HEPA by US government standards, an air filter must remove (from the air that passes through) 99.97% of particles that have a size of 0.3 µm.

Tips for Utilizing the Air Purifier

1. Close windows while the purifier is running

Air purifier is mainly used for purifying indoor air. However, opening the windows allows outdoor air and pollutants go into the indoor area. The purifying circulation is then be affected and cannot be completely done. Therefore, open some of the windows only after the circulation is completed to avoid high concentration of CO2 in indoor area.

2. Keep the purifier running

To maintain good indoor air quality, keep the purifier running for the whole day or at least 10-12 hours a day.

3. Place the purifier in the middle of the room

In order to produce the best possible result for air circulation, place the purifier in the middle of room. Also, make sure that there is nothing blocking the air inlet and outlet.

4. Clean and change the filters regularly

Dirt, allergens and bacteria will be trapped and accumulated on the filter after using for a long period, so regular replacement of filters is needed to maintain good filtration efficiency. Generally, filters are recommended to be replaced every half to 3 years.
